Stop the Taranaki LNG Import Build

Should New Zealand rule out development of a new gas import terminal in Taranaki?

Plans are progressing for a new LNG import terminal build in Taranaki to support national energy supply. The project aims to prevent electricity shortages and reduce prices for consumers. However, the build is set to be funded by a nationwide levy on electricity consumers when existing supply could be made more affordable by directly regulating price setting behaviour by electricity suppliers. Expanding reliance on imported fuel instead of domestic resources also increases New Zealand’s exposure to international oil shocks and deepens the economy’s dependence on fossil fuels over the long-term.
