Traffic Congestion Charging
Should local councils be allowed to implement road user charges in high traffic density areas?
The New Zealand Government has introduced legislation enabling traffic congestion charging, allowing local councils to apply charges for using certain roads during peak times. If implemented, councils would decide where, when, and how charges apply within their areas. This could include specific zones, corridors, or time periods. The approach represents a shift from funding and managing roads primarily through taxes and fuel charges to using targeted pricing. No congestion charging schemes are currently in operation in New Zealand, however Auckland Council is actively developing potential models for the city.
