Regional airline fuel costs

Should the government temporarily subsidise fuel costs for small domestic airlines?

Air travel plays a critical role in connecting New Zealand’s regions, where geography and low population density make some routes commercially challenging. Smaller domestic airlines often operate routes with thin demand, meaning margins are small and rising fuel costs can quickly push them toward closure. When services are withdrawn, communities lose access to essential connections for healthcare, education, and business. At the same time, government intervention raises difficult questions about using public funds to support businesses that may not be commercially viable over the long-term.
